Description
The multibunch (or bunch-by-bunch) feedback (MBF) system at Diamond Light Source requires the bunch phase of the stored beam to be aligned with the kicks delivered by the feedback algorithm, which are modulated onto the fixed master oscillator signal. Changes to this relative bunch phase in the existing machine can occur, for example, when the RF systems are adjusted. The remedial adjustment to the MBF phase offset, originally performed manually, was automated in 2019 by a beam-locked-loop system called the Delayed Orbit Reference Improvement Scheme (DORIS) which operates at a 100 Hz update rate. The Diamond-II booster ring will feature another MBF deployment, which will require continuous bunch phase tracking (18 deg/ms maximum) due to both the varying synchrotron phase across the energy ramp and the operational feature of setting an arbitrary injection and extraction phase. This paper presents the performance of a new SuperDORIS system resulting from several optimisations to the original firmware code, increasing the sample rate by a factor of 50 and tracking linear phase shifts of 90 deg/ms. The ability to reset to the previous injection phase after booster extraction has been added to reduce initial lock time.
