Description
A real-time bunch-by-bunch phase detector has been developed and deployed at the Taiwan Photon Source to monitor and analyze synchronous phase behavior. The detector utilizes an analog demodulation scheme for precise phase extraction. To compensate for hardware imperfections, an ellipse-fitting calibration method is proposed to correct direct current offsets and quadrature phase errors between the in-phase and quadrature (I/Q) channels. With this calibrated performance, the system achieves a phase noise standard deviation of lower than 0.025°, and the absolute phase error remains within 0.5° across a full 120° operational range. For measurements involving low phase variations, the relative error is kept below 15%, while the system maintains a phase error under 1.5° within an 8 dB dynamic range of input power. The collected phase data is seamlessly integrated into the accelerator’s control system with a 3 Hz update rate, enabling real-time visualization and study of transient beam loading effects with and without a harmonic cavity. The system is capable of recording 700 turns of bunch motion for detailed phase variation analysis. By applying independent component analysis to the data, a 7 kHz in-phase synchrotron oscillation was successfully identified and traced to the switching frequency of the radio-frequency system's transmitter.
