Description

This work discusses recent developments towards remanufacturing and improvement of the
IGBT-based, CLIA compact Solid-State Marx Generator (SSM). The CLIA SSM as described in 2010
produced a 48-kV, 160-A, 5-usec square pulse at a 50-Hz rep rate to drive a magnetron. The new
upgrade will be a 48-kV, 110-A, 5-usec square pulse in a 200-Hz rep rate. The CLIA circuit
topology is posiVve polarity Marx. The CLIA output flaXop had 3.8% droop, which should be
maintained by the successor Marx generator. The CLIA uses IGBT switching and diode charging.
A new test board for the IXYS IXBT-42N170 used on CLIA is discussed. The board contains an
isolated gate drive region which triggers the IGBT at a floaVng voltage. The effect of input line
impedance from the Highland fiber opVc module is shown. Pulse voltage data up to 1kV is
shown for a single stage. Discussion of the performance of C4AQ capacitors from KEMET is
considered in addiVon to performance of the snubber system. Techniques for electrically safe
performance of solid state marx generators are described.
