Description
The international Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) is a heavy ion accelerator complex currently under construction at the GSI Helmholtz Centre for heavy ion research in Darmstadt. Following a major fire incident at the particle beam source of GSI and FAIR, the linear accelerator UNILAC, a threefold plan has been devised to restore beam operation for accelerator commissioning and science experiments. Initial commissioning of FAIR beamlines in 2027 will be facilitated with a low current, medium ion mass linac directly at the injection of the SIS18 synchrotron. Until restoration of UNILAC operation, which is required to enable the full FAIR/GSI science programme and is expected in 2031, an intermediate linear heavy-ion accelerator for further commissioning and first science experiments is planned to be set up and commissioned until autumn of 2028. Here, we present the scope of the project, the process of finding a suitable installation space, current beam dynamics and beamline design, and the project time schedule.
