Description

Over the past decades, Indian laboratories have developed accelerators for industrial and medical applications. RRCAT and BARC have built industrial RF electron linacs and DC accelerators, while SAMEER and VECC have developed medical accelerators, including electron linacs and cyclotrons. Industrial uses include waste and wastewater treatment, food and agricultural processing, mutation breeding, material irradiation studies, surface modification, and polymer cross-linking. Medical applications include sterilization of products, radioisotope production, and radiotherapy. Several systems are already field deployed. Recently, a 10 MeV, 10 kW electron linac developed at RRCAT was deployed in industry through R&D–industry collaboration. SAMEER linacs operate in hospitals for radiotherapy, and RRCAT is developing linacs for similar use. Development of an 18 MeV medical cyclotron at VECC is at an advanced stage, and BARC has developed an 800 keV, 50 kW DC electron accelerator for industrial use. The talk will review R&D efforts across centres, highlighting experience in reliable operation and lessons from productization and deployment of such accelerator systems.
