Description

The ELI – Gamma-ray Beam System (ELI-GBS) is under implementation at Extreme Light Infrastructure - Nuclear Physics (ELI-NP) in Romania. The system uses an 800 MeV S-band accelerator as an Inverse Compton Scattering (ICS) source coupled to an interaction laser. Tunable γ-ray beams will be available with energies up to 19.5 MeV to drive the scientific program which requires high spectral density (larger than 5×10$^{3}$ photons/s/eV), narrow bandwidth better than 0.5%, and linear polarization higher than 95%.

The S-band accelerator is fully installed and commissioning of various sub-systems is underway with electrons to be transported to the diagnostics stations in Summer of 2026. An electron transfer line and the electron-laser interaction chamber are contracted and installation is planned for Q4 2026. Details of the commissioning status of the LINAC, electron transport line, interaction laser system, and challenges for completing the system will be highlighted.
