Description
The Electron Storage Ring (ESR) of the Electron Ion Collider (EIC) will emit large amounts of synchrotron radiation at its top electron energy of 18 GeV. Radiation transport Monte Carlo simulations performed in FLUKA demonstrate that without radiation shielding placed between the vacuum beampipe and magnet coils, the useable magnet lifetime will be reduced significantly to less than 1 year due to radiation induced degradation of magnet coil insulation. Thus, radiation shielding is being designed around the vacuum beampipe to limit dosage to magnet coils. Design challenges such as vacuum bakeout, installation clearances, shielding material selection, and cost all must be carefully considered.
