Description
IFMIF-DONES is an ESFRI facility based on a 5 MW deuteron accelerator currently under construction in Granada (Spain) as part of the European roadmap to fusion electricity. Its main goal is to characterize and qualify materials under a neutron field with an induced damage like the one faced in a fusion reactor, developing a material database for the future fusion nuclear reactors.
The successful implementation of advanced engineering tools in large-scale scientific infrastructures requires a thorough understanding of the existing data and 3D modelling environment amongst other important items. This study analyses the starting state of information integration at IFMIF-DONES. The study reviews the workflows, data structures, and digital assets in use, identifying strengths and limitations in the context of project complexity and multidisciplinary collaboration. A comparative assessment is conducted with similar international facilities, such as ITER, CERN and ESS, focusing on their approaches to information management and digital continuity. The findings highlight key factors influencing the adoption of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) solutions, including interoperability, traceability, and scalability. Based on this analysis, recommendations are provided to guide the decision-making process for PLM tool implementation at IFMIF-DONES, aiming to enhance efficiency, data integrity, and long-term maintainability.
