Description
The ASPECT project at the European XFEL (EuXFEL) aims to generate isolated attosecond X-ray pulses in the SASE1 beamline using compression-based beam manipulation. In the proposed scheme, the longitudinal phase space is tailored along the linac to produce a strong energy chirp and a localized current spike created in an ESASE chicane upstream of SASE1. The resulting high-current spike is used to drive attosecond SASE emission while keeping the rest of the bunch largely passive. This contribution describes the underlying concept, the accessible parameter space and tolerances for attosecond operation, the commissioning strategy and key diagnostics for the first machine studies at European XFEL, targeting peak currents above 20 kA in the spike and TW-level, sub-100 as (FWHM) X-ray pulse durations.
