Description
Recently, the acceleration of multi-isotopic beams has gained attention as the delivery of mixed helium and carbon ion beams was proposed for online range verification in carbon ion therapy. For small relative offsets in the charge-to-mass ratios, such as those for e.g. 4He2+ and 12C6+, a modified form of the well-known longitudinal equations of motion taking the offset in charge-to-mass ratio into account can be derived. This contribution reviews fundamentals of these modified linearized longitudinal equations of motion and discusses the arising implications.
