Description
A Fast Faraday Cup (FFC) has been designed and fabricated at ESS-Bilbao to measure the bunch length and to characterize the longitudinal and temporal structure of the proton beam downstream of the Multi-Harmonic Buncher (MHB) of the ISOLDE-Superconducting Recoil Separator (ISRS). The fast faraday cup is based on the wideband microstrip structure to preserve the intrinsic timing structure of the bunched beam and minimize signal distortion. A dedicated biasing and amplification system was also developed to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio and ensure faithful detection of fast transient signals. The beam is collected on the biased collector of the microstrip and transferred to the RF wideband amplification system. The amplification system includes the voltage biasing to suppress the secondary electron emission during beam impact on the collector surface. The amplified signal then is analyzed on a wideband oscilloscope to extract the bunch length and bunch timing structure with precision. The system setup and results of the bunch length measurements are discussed in this paper.
