Description
Intrabeam scattering (IBS) in the SwissFEL injector has been shown to significantly impact performance through a larger-than-expected slice energy spread. Using a combination of numerical modelling and a newly developed analytical formulation, the measured slice energy spreads have been successfully reproduced with strong agreement. This raises an important question of how to mitigate these effects in future operation. Building on this understanding, we have explored new operational schemes to improve FEL performance in the presence of IBS, including velocity and ballistic bunching schemes in the electron source.
