Description

The objective of this project is to optimize the configuration of the horn focusing system used in neutrino beamlines to focus pions across a range of energies. This includes a study of the linearity of the analytical model for magnetic horn focusing put forth in the paper “Precision Beam Diagnostics at the NuMI Facility Using Muon Monitor Observations” by Katsuya Yonehara et al, as well as implementation of nonlinear corrections to account for chromaticity. This study is done by comparing the simulation data generated in G4 Beamline to the analytical models for the focusing length and other variables such as the Twiss parameters. The main variables used in this comparison are the radial position of the incident particle at the vertex of the horn, the angles of the particle trajectory before and after passing through the horn, the parabolic profile coefficient of the horn, and the horizontal intercept of the particle path. In addition, the initial position of the particle source and the longitudinal momentum are manipulated in order to optimize the horn focusing system. This information is used to find the optimal configuration of magnetic horns to properly focus both positively and negatively charged pions, which can then be used in multiple experiments going forward.
