Description
The European Spallation Source employs a LINAC with outstanding power, making it a natural candidate for a high-precision neutrino beam aimed at determining neutrino cross-sections at the sub-GeV scale with percent-level accuracy. This opportunity is currently being evaluated within Work Package 6 of the ESSnuSB+ Design Study. In this talk, we present the design of a neutrino beamline that uses a fraction of the LINAC power to feed a ‘monitored neutrino beam’ directed towards a water Cherenkov detector, address the main technical challenges, and discuss the expected physics performance. Special emphasis is placed on the development of a novel static focusing system for secondary mesons that enables the use of the LINAC without any modification to its layout and without the need for magnetic horns.
