Description

The Metrology Light Source (MLS) is an electron storage ring owned by the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) and operated by the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB). The light source is dedicated to synchrotron-light-based metrology from the EUV to the THz range. User operation of the machine began in 2008 and continues today with high demand. To meet future user requirements while maintaining the highest availability and stability, the MLS will be upgraded to MLS+. Core improvements include a general refurbishment of key infrastructure, the installation of an additional undulator, and a redesign of the injection scheme based on a non-linear kicker. The upgrade is intended to ensure reliable operation for the coming decades. Design studies of the upgrade program are reported.
