Description
Storage ring based on steady-state microbunching (SSMB) is a promis-
ing approach for generating high average power coherent radiation, while
the instabilities driven by coherent undulator radiation in the SSMB laser
modulator (LM) is important for the ring performance. In this paper
we investigate the longitudinal single-bunch multi-turn instabilities using
cavity mode decomposition techniques. The longitudinal beam dynamics
equations including the coherent undulator radiation field are derived, and
the instability growth rates are analyzed. Key parameters affecting the
instabilities are explored, and simulation results are presented to validate
the theoretical models. The findings shall provide insights into the design
and operation of SSMB storage rings to mitigate the adverse effects of
these instabilities.
