Description
Transporting low emittance, high current beams like those required for free electron lasers is non-trivial. A deflection arc designed without specific consideration for such high-quality beams may result in degraded performance in the downstream undulators due to non-zero longitudinal dispersion compressing or decompressing the beam or due to the coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) increasing both the slice and projected emittances. In this paper we discuss a deflection arc for a proposed second fan at the European X-ray Free Electron Laser and some of the design considerations, particularly in order to assure isochronicity and CSR mitigation.
