Description
At Eindhoven University of Technology, a lab-based tabletop x-ray source has been commissioned based on inverse Compton scattering (ICS). In the ICS process monochromatic x-rays are produced by colliding relativistic electron bunches with intense laser pulses. This compact and tunable source bridges the gap between conventional lab sources and synchrotrons, making advanced x-ray diagnostics accessible to a wide range of applications. The beamline utilizes a 100 kV DC photoelectron gun in combination with an X-band LINAC. The X-band LINAC is based on a design for the CERN Compact Linear Collider (CLIC), which has been adapted to allow for the injection of subrelativistic electrons. After acceleration the focused electron bunches collide with focused femtosecond laser pulses, producing x-ray photons with energies between 5 and 40 keV. In this presentation we cover the design and commissioning of Smart*Light. We discuss the characteristics of the x-ray beam, and results from the first demonstration experiments.
