Description

The TSU's (Trigger Synchronization Unit ) purpose is to synchronize beam dump requests with the Beam Abort Gap (BAG) upon request from clients, primarily the Beam Interlock System (BIS). Synchronization is crucial to prevent damaging absorbers/collimators and cryo ring magnets.
The TSU system, per beam, comprises two interconnected, redundant chassis for synchronization. It internally regenerates the Beam Revolution Frequency (BRF) in case of signal loss. Synchronization between chassis and internal surveillance ensures high level of redundancy. Dump triggers are issued via three paths: two synchronous and one asynchronous with delay. Software analyses post-mortem all dump triggers and critical signals for interlocking the TSU system on any unissued or abnormal triggers.
The TSU is a safety-critical system for both SPS and LHC Beam Dumping Systems, requiring high reliability. At the LBDS, one asynchronous dump is allowed per year of operation, and one catastrophic failure is acceptable per thousand years.
During the design process, a full hardware and principle reliability study was conducted with CERN's Reliability Analysis Working Group (RAWG). In addition, a lab test bench is designed to test all functional requirements using unit tests.
This paper presents the TSU system implementation, high-level software, GUI, and reliability study steps and results. The study confirmed TSU's high reliability, meeting initial specifications, with no single point of failure identified.
