Description
The Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM) has initiated a proton linear accelerator development program aimed at broadening its expertise in accelerator technologies to enable future applications in radioisotope production and proton therapy. As a first step in this initiative, a 1 MeV Proton Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) operating at 476 MHz was designed, manufactured, assembled, and commissioned in Brazil. This work discusses aspects of the beam dynamics, RF design, vane modulation design, vacuum system, and beam measurements of the prototype. Emphasis is given to beam performance comparisons between simulations and experimental measurements of both the ion source extraction line and the accelerated beam, including transmission, phase-space evolution, emittance, einzellens scanning, and spectrometer-based beam characterization. The comparisons provide insights to the team and increase overall confidence in engineering solutions adopted during the development, including a vacuum sealing strategy based on 3D O-rings. Finally, future developments planned for this initiative are outlined.
