Description
Accelerator-based sources of coherent terahertz radiation provide a promising route to high peak and high average power emission in a spectral region that remains challenging for conventional technologies. At TRIUMF, the existing electron linac is being upgraded as a flexible platform for broadband coherent THz generation.
We report the second experimental observation of coherent THz transition radiation produced at the TRIUMF electron linac using the existing accelerator configuration and diagnosed with an interferometric technique. The measurements demonstrate broadband THz emission consistent with coherent scaling, obtained without dedicated bunch compression hardware [1].
Building on this initial demonstration, a comprehensive accelerator upgrade program is underway. This includes the development of a new high-brightness photoelectron gun, a magnetic bunch compressor [2], and a dedicated arc beamline providing the required longitudinal dispersion for coherent radiation generation and transport.
These results establish a clear path toward a dedicated accelerator-based THz facility at TRIUMF and provide an important benchmark for future linac-driven THz sources.
