Description
With ~40 successful years of operational life behind it, ISIS’ linac tank 4 at RAL in the UK recently underwent a faultless replacement programme seeing the facility upgraded with a new 20MeV accelerating cavity. The fate of the old tank required careful consideration, with necessary attention to the environmental and sustainable impact presented. Here we tell the story of a very large radioactive accelerator component that avoided an expensive trip to landfill, and became a public art installation.
