Description
ESS has achieved beam operation on the commissioning beam dump in 2025, after technical commissioning of the RF system providing RF power to the RFQ, 3 bunchers, 5 DTL tanks, 26 spoke cavities in 13 cryomodules and 56 elliptical cavities in 14 cryomodules of two different beta. 91 RF stations of different technologies (Klystrons, SSA and tetrodes) and two frequencies (352 MHz and 704 MHz) power independently the linac cavities, providing the capability to accelerate a 2 MW beam to the spallation targed, with a duty cycle of 4%, 2.85 ms pulse lenght and 14 Hz repetition rate. Each RF system is driven by a LLRF system and a local protection system handling cavity and RF source interlocks.
The extension of the RF infrastructure for a potential of 3 MW operation is currently undergoing after the tunnel installation of 24 additional elliptical cavities in 6 cryomodules last summer.
A development is currently ongoing to replace the 400 kW tetrode-based sources with SSA technology.
This contribution describe the large RF infrastructure and its main components.
