Description

This talk treats parasitic creation and acceleration of H-particles in a proton linear accelerator. It proposes, and provides evidence, that protons extracted from an ECR source interact with residual gas along the LEBT section thus creating H- ions. These are transported to the RFQ, RF-bunched therein, and finally RF-accelerated up to the nominal proton energy. Once passing a deflection dipole, H- manifests through significantly increased radiation dose levels at the deflection direction being opposite to the proton deflection direction.
