Description
To measure bunch lengths at the SLS 2.0, a streak camera is often used. Although a superb device, degradation of the photocathode with extended exposure prevents its use as a continuous beam monitor. We have been exploring the use of high-bandwidth photodiodes together with RF components to sample the beam spectrum at frequencies that correspond to the spectrum of a single bunch, which extends to 20 GHz (13-30 ps rms bunch length). The current setup has a bandwidth of up to 2 GHz at each frequency of interest, to allow individual bunches in the 500 MHz bunch train to be resolved.
This presentation will focus on the concept of the monitor, detailed characterization of individual components, and first measurement results with beam.
