Description
The main magnet of the TRIUMF 520 MeV cyclotron consists of 4,000-tonnes of steel that needs to produce a field accurate to 3 parts per million across the 18 m diameter cylindrical vacuum chamber. Measurements were done to quantify the field behaviour and a new procedure was developed to reliably restore the field to operating conditions. The ramping and conditioning procedure improved the reproducibility of machine settings and reduced setup time.
