Description
The beamline inside the TPS tunnel at the National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center is transmitted through stainless steel pipes. However, part of the pipeline in TPS24 is exposed to the atmosphere, without full connection. It is suspected that a chemical substance or radiation has led to corrosion at some flange areas, resulting in the formation of white crystals.
Ozone readily reacts with aluminum, and SEM/EDS analysis of the white crystals showed significant amounts of oxygen and aluminum. The ozone concentration in the area with the most white crystals was measured over 24 hours, with recordings every 10 seconds. The average concentration was 1.013 ppm, with a maximum of 3.872 ppm, confirming ozone production in this area.
SEM/EDS analysis of the compound indicated high levels of aluminum and oxygen. Although the ozone concentration is not extremely high, it accumulates over time, reacting with the aluminum to form white crystals. Going forward, the pipe material will be upgraded to stainless steel or fully connected to avoid atmospheric exposure and prevent beamline misalignment.
